ECLAC Caribbean Committee Highlights National Ownership, Coordination for 2030 Agenda [viewed]

1280784375ECLAC_logo22 April 2016: Senior government officials shared their perspectives on sustainable development priorities in the Caribbean, during the 26th session of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC), a subsidiary body of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Among other priorities, participants stressed national ownership and integrated planning, and suggested addressing debt management through a Caribbean Resilience Fund.

IYP 2016 Events Promote Pulses as “Climate-Smart” Food of the Future [viewed]

icp_fao20 April 2016: Two events organized as part of the International Year of Pulses (IYP 2016) have called for increased efforts to scale up global production of pulses, such as beans, chickpeas, and lentils, due to their multiple benefits as nutrient-dense, soil improving and “climate-smart” crops. The International Conference on Pulses for Health, Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture in Drylands (ICP 2016) took place from 18-20 April in Rabat, Morocco, while the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) hosted a seminar in Rome, Italy addressing the links between pulses and soils (the focus of international efforts in 2015), on 19 April 2016.

Event: 5th UCLG Congress: World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders [viewed]

Organized by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the 5th UCLG Congress: World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders will convene under the theme ‘Local Voices for a Better World'. The Summit will bring together over 3000 stakeholders to: promote the recommendations, practices and experiences of local and regional authorities; help ensure they are realized; and create a space for meeting and exchange among local and regional elected officials, as well as communities. UCLG will also present new formats exploring the structural changes required to face existing challenges and approach development from a different perspective, including integrating the UCLG family into one "Network Hub" where ideas can be shared and exchanged. The Summit will also aim to advance recommendations on the localization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and feed into the UN Conference on Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), to be held the 17 to 20 October 2016, in Quito, Ecuador and its expected outcome, the New Urban Agenda.

FfD Side Events Focus on Tax and Debt, Financing Retreat Urges Coherence [viewed]

FfD20 April 2016: International organizations held several events on the sidelines of the UN Economic and Social Council's (ECOSOC) Inaugural Forum on Financing for Development (FfD) Follow-up (FfD Forum), which took place from 18-20 April. Participants highlighted the importance of domestic resource mobilization through improved tax collection, and addressing systemic issues and debt.

Event: Thirty-sixth Session of ECLAC [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will bring together Ministers of Foreign Affairs, senior representatives from ECLAC member States, and other international organization and civil society stakeholders to reflect upon the region's development strategies in the context of commitments under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session will consider an ECLAC position document, titled ‘Horizon 2030: Equality at the Centre of Sustainable Development' during a high-level seminar from 26-27 May. Additional sessions will consider: implementing the 2030 Agenda from the perspective of social and economic inclusion; regional dimensions of follow-up on the 2030 Agenda; South-South cooperation; social policies for equality; industrial policies for structural change; and macroeconomics for sustainable development. The session will also address a report on the activities of the Commission since its 35th session and a report on the activities of the subsidiary bodies of ECLAC and the outcomes of intergovernmental meetings organized by ECLAC since its 35th session.

Outlook on Green Finance: Impetus Grows for Carbon Pricing, Clean Energy [viewed]

cp_india_france_ndb25 April 2016: Over the past few days, announcements supporting carbon pricing and clean energy have been made. Ten leaders have issued a joint vision statement laying out the goal of doubling the percentage of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions covered by explicit carbon pricing to 25% by 2020, and of doubling it again to achieve 50% coverage within the next decade. In separate news, over 25 countries have pledged to unleash a potential investment flow of up to US$1 trillion into solar assets. And for its part, the New Development Bank has announced it will provide US$811 million in a first round of loans for clean energy projects in Brazil, China, India and South Africa.

Host of CBD COP 13 Releases Non-paper Supporting a Declaration on Biodiversity Mainstreaming [viewed]

mexico_cbd22 April 2016: Mexico intends to highlight the importance of biodiversity mainstreaming for the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its role as the host of the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the aim of facilitating the adoption of a ‘Cancun Declaration.' Mexico has prepared a non-paper outlining possible elements of the declaration.

IPOA Draft Outcome Revised [viewed]

UN-OHRLLS19 April 2016: The co-facilitators for the preparatory process on the high-level mid-term review of the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPOA) have revised the draft outcome document, to incorporate views expressed at the preparatory meeting of experts in March 2016. The revised draft will serve as the basis for informal consultations, beginning in New York, US, on 25 April 2016. Benedicte Frankinet, Permanent Representative of Belgium, and Jean-Francis Zinsou, Permanent Representative of Benin, serve as co-facilitators.

Countries Pursue National and Regional Actions on Land Degradation Monitoring and Restoration [viewed]

Event: Capacity Development to Improve Management of ABNJ Workshop during Blue Week Grenada 2016 [viewed]

This workshop, titled ‘Capacity Development to Improve Management of Marine Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ): Needs, Experiences, Options and Opportunities,' will bring together governments, international organizations, civil society and regional and national leaders to advance capacity on ABNJ and formulate next steps on capacity development related to marine resource management, especially with regard to a legally-binding international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Global Ocean Forum, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the University of Delaware and partners are organizing the event, which will take place during Blue Week and Investment Conference, from 14-22 May. The Conference aims to harness the blue growth paradigm into a package of bankable projects as well as to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 14.7 to “increase the economic benefits to small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism.”
