UNDG Launches Publication on National SDG Implementation [viewed]

sdg_are_coming_to_life20 July 2016: On the sidelines of the 2016 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the UN Development Group (UNDG) launched a publication on translating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into practice in 16 countries. At the launch side event, representatives of the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Montenegro, Pakistan and Sierra Leone presented their experiences and challenges related to SDG implementation.

HLPF Hears First-ever Voluntary National Reviews on SDGs [viewed]

hlpf_ban_ki_moon19 July 2016: Thirteen governments gave the first-ever Voluntary National Reviews, reporting on efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in their countries. The VNR presentations began on the second day of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) Ministerial Segment. The reports - provided by Mexico, Morocco, Switzerland, Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Norway, Madagascar, Georgia, Turkey, Finland, Samoa, Uganda and Germany - emphasized the need to: modify existing national economic and development planning processes; engage different government departments and broader technical expertise; develop indicators and collect data; and ensure high-level leadership.

World Bank, UNDP and Countries Discuss SDG Implementation Factors [viewed]

UNESCO Committee Adds 12 Sites to World Heritage List [viewed]

UNESCO17 July 2016: The 40th session of the World Heritage Committee adopted the Istanbul Declaration on the Protection of World Heritage, which invites States Parties to take measures and act together against the destruction of common heritage of humankind in cooperation with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Participants also added 12 sites of special cultural or physical significance to the World Heritage List.

ELD, PROFOR and UNCCD Marshall Evidence in Support of Land Restoration [viewed]

eld_cgiar_unccd_proforJuly 2016: Partners of the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative are fine-tuning a joint roadmap for the next phase of the Initiative, which aims to increase awareness raising and engage key stakeholders to scale up efforts to promote sustainable land management (SLM). Some recent studies bolstering the case for large-scale land restoration initiatives include: the ELD synthesis report, 'The Value of Land'; the forthcoming Global Land Outlook, to be published by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 2017; and an article by the Program on Forests (PROFOR), which draws some lessons from Fazenda da Toca, a large-scale land restoration project in São Paolo, Brazil.

Stakeholders Share Views on Refugees, Migrants Ahead of HLM [viewed]

hlm18 July 2016: As part of the preparatory process for the High-level Meeting (HLM) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to address large movements of refugees and migrants, UNGA President Mogens Lykketoft convened an informal, interactive, multi-stakeholder hearing to discuss migration and refugees in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UNGA 2nd Committee - Economic and Financial13 July 2016: During a high-level thematic debate of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on human rights, many participants underscored that human rights, discrimination and inequality are at the center of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and that peace, security, human rights and development are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. Many also observed that human rights violations portend conflicts, and that conflicts are a cause of human rights violations.

UNSG Candidates Highlight Gender, UN Reform, Inclusiveness [viewed]

United Nations12 July 2016: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Mogens Lykketoft held a Townhall event for candidates for the position of next UN Secretary-General to discuss their vision. The event was globally televised live by Al Jazeera Media Network. Ten of the 12 current candidates participated, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the UN, and taking questions from UN Member States and the public, both from the floor and via video.
