UN/ISDR Calls for Smarter Water Management to Reduce Disaster Risks [viewed]

24 August 2011: During World Water Week, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) called for increased investments in disaster-resilient infrastructure as well as smarter water management to avoid drought, floods and other water-related disasters, particularly in urban areas.

Event: Eleventh International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant [viewed]

The theme of ICMGP 2013 is "Science informing global policy". The conference will celebrate the agreement on the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and consider how to put the treaty into practice. The meeting aims to exchange information on the science of mercury behavior and release, and its effect on ecosystems.

Event: Sixth Latin American Carbon Forum [viewed]

The Sixth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACF) will discuss the future of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and prospects for carbon projects in Latin America. The Forum is co-organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications of Costa Rica, the World Bank Institute (WBI), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Event: FAO-OECD Expert Meeting on Greening the Economy with Agriculture [viewed]

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is collaborating with partners in analyzing existing information and developing possible scenarios for Greening the Economy with Agriculture (GEA), including an evaluation of sustainability progress and gaps in the food supply chain to projection of food supply and demand towards 2050, and the joint FAO/Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) meeting will focus on addressing these scenarios. The meeting will be hosted by OECD at its headquarters and FAO will support the participation to this meeting of selected experts and chiefly, those from seven developing countries. Attendance at the Expert Meeting is by invitation only. Agenda items include: low footprint and productive food and agriculture systems; decent rural livelihoods, green jobs and land tenure; resilience to shocks of low-carbon food systems; quality and health of green food; and policy coherence for GEA.

Event: 37th Special Session of CARICOM's Council on Trade and Economic Development (COTED) [viewed]

This special session of COTED will discuss work on the Community's environmental policy framework and cooperative efforts regarding climate change, sustainable land management and renewable energy. Among other things, participants will discuss Community follow-up to the Cancun Climate Change Conference and preparations for Durban Climate Change Conference. COTED also will discuss Community preparations for the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). COTED is also expected to review and approve the draft Caribbean Subregional Action Plan (SRAP) on sustainable land management (SLM) and decide how to finance its implementation. The SRAP is one of the outputs of the Partnership Initiative on Sustainable Land Management in the Caribbean SIDS (PISLM) supported by the UNCCD's Global Mechanism. In addition, the Special Session will receive an update on progress in developing CARICOM's Environment and Natural Resources Policy Framework, and will review work on the CARICOM Renewable Energy Road Map.

Mayor's Summit on DRR Adopts Chengdu Declaration of Action [viewed]

16 August 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that 38 parliamentarians from 33 countries have adopted the Chengdu Declaration of Action, a five-point strategy addressing natural resource and environmental management, climate change and disaster risks.
