Caribbean Forum Identifies Priorities for Sustainable Development [viewed]

11 March 2013: The Caribbean Forum on "Shaping a sustainable development agenda to address the Caribbean reality in the 21st century" took place in Bogota, Colombia, on 5-6 March 2013, and concluded with participants adopting conclusions on priority areas as well as guidelines on how to continue working toward development in the Caribbean.

Event: CARIWIG Inaugural Workshop [viewed]

The inaugural workshop of the Caribbean Weather Impacts Group (CARIWIG) Project will serve as its first stakeholder consultation, bringing together managers, technical personnel and policy makers from 25 national, intergovernmental and regional entities to discuss how CARIWIG can best serve the Caribbean's water, agriculture and coastal resource sectors through reliable access to unbiased, locally-relevant climate change information in a manner that complements their planning cycles. Funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), CARIWIG is to be implemented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the University of the West Indies, the University of East Anglia (UK) and Cuba's Institute of Meteorology.

Website Launched on Climate Change Weather Impacts in the Caribbean [viewed]

CCCCC, CARIBSAVE Launch Caribbean Fish Sanctuary Project [viewed]

12 November 2012: The Caribbean Fish Sanctuary Partnership Initiative ("C-FISH"), a four-year (2012-2016) project on the management of 15 community-based "no take" zones or marine reserves in five Caribbean countries, was launched on 9 November 2012, in Bluefields, Jamaica.

CARICOM Assesses Biodiversity-Related Statistics and Indicators [viewed]

CARICOM23 November 2012: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat is consulting Community member governments to assess the current state of national environmental statistics collection, management, and dissemination. The focus is on statistics related to agriculture and land use, biodiversity, coastal and marine resources, and forestry.

Tributes Extended for Angela Cropper [viewed]

13 November 2012: Angela Cropper, former Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), passed away on 12 November 2012. Throughout Cropper's international career, she also served as the first Executive Secretary to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and as Senior Adviser on Environment and Development at the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Bureau for Development Policy.

Event: Caribbean Regional Workshop on the Use of Integrated Environmental Assessment Tools for MEAs Mainstreaming [viewed]

This workshop will demonstrate the use of innovative integrated environmental assessment (IEA) tools to generate win-win scenarios for achieving national development priorities through more effective implementation of multilateral environment agreements (MEAs), with a focus on mainstreaming in relation to a cluster of biodiversity-related MEAs. The workshop is part of the EU-funded Multilateral Environment Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP MEAs) Project.

ACP-MEAs Project Highlights Work on Pesticide Management [viewed]

October 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission have released the June 2012 issue of the newsletter on the Multilateral Environment Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP MEAs) Project. The newsletter features a guest article on the ways in which pesticide management contributes to the implementation of Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs).

GWP-C Trains Agriculture Practitioners in Barbados in Water Use Efficiency [viewed]

26 October 2012: The Global Water Partnership - Caribbean (GWP-C) and Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) trained 20 participants from the agriculture sector in Barbados in water use efficiency (WUE). The training opened with an address by Charleston Lucas, Chief Agricultural Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Barbados, who underlined that “there can be no food security without without land and water security.”
