Event: Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices [viewed]

The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) secretariat, on behalf of the partner organizations, is coordinating a Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices, which will take place on 1-2 October 2012, in Brussels, Belgium. The two-day meeting will bring together invited academics, political decision makers and actors from the private sector to provide for inter-sectoral discussions in the course of the ELD initiative. Discussions will focus on the valuation of land and land-based ecosystem services in supporting decision-making in the process of economical, environmental and social sustainable development. The meeting is jointly organized by the ELD Secretariat and the United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) and will be funded by the German Ministry for Development and Economic Cooperation, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the European Commission. The latter will also be hosting the meeting.

Event: Global Soil Week: Soils for Life [viewed]

The First Global Soil Week will provide a platform to initiate follow-up actions on land and soil-related decisions made at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and will take place in the framework of the FAO's Global Soil Partnership. This event will provide a forum of interactive exchange and dialogue among stakeholders from science, government, business and civil society. The event is organized through a collaboration between the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies' (IASS') Global Soil Forum and the European Commission (EC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Joint Investment Brings Electricity to Rural Communities in Nicaragua [viewed]

13 July 2012: Nicaragua has inaugurated a small hydropower plant to bring electricity to 3,000 people in 533 households in eight rural communities. The plant was financed and built with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Energy and Environment Partnership for Central America (EEP) and others.

ECPA Takes Stock of Energy Policies in Seven Caribbean SIDS [viewed]

June 2012: The Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) released a report on the state of the energy sector and energy policy in seven small island developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, with an emphasis on renewable energy and energy efficiency opportunities in each country: Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

ACTO Agrees to Initiate Electronic CITES Permitting [viewed]

19 June 2012: The Secretariats of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) signed an agreement for a joint project to develop electronic CITES permitting in the eight ACTO nations (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela) for the traceability of specimens of CITES-listed species in international trade.
