Event: 2013 G20 Leaders Summit [viewed]

The Russian Federation has set as the objective of its 2013 Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20): developing a set of measures aimed at boosting sustainable, inclusive and balanced growth and jobs creation around the world. The G20 will look at eight areas in particular in 2013: framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth; jobs and employment; international financial architecture reform; strengthening financial regulation; energy sustainability; development for all; enhancing multilateral trade; and fighting corruption. The G20 brings together finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries - Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and the US - plus the EU. The G20 Leaders Summit in September 2013 is preceded by a series of outreach events organized in five streams: think tanks; business; labour; civil society and youth.

LAC Countries Approve Action Plan on Principle 10 [viewed]

lac_countries_approve18 April 2013: The 14 signatory countries to the Declaration on the Application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, on access to information, justice and public participation, approved a 2014 action plan to conclude a regional agreement on applying Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Fifth BRICS Summit Discusses Partnership for Development in Africa [viewed]

27 March 2013: Representatives from Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) met in Durban, South Africa, on 27 March 2013, at the Fifth BRICS Summit, which addressed the theme “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialization.” The Summit concluded with the adoption of the eThekwini Declaration, which considers a range of international issues, including the global economy, sustainable development, climate change and trade.

Peru Holds NAMAs Workshop [viewed]

15 March 2013: Peru's Environment Ministry (MINAM), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Low-Emission Capacity Building Programme, the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and Ecofys' Mitigation Momentum Project organized a technical workshop on developing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) for three sectors and roadmaps for their implementation in Peru.

Event: Leadership Summit for the Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) [viewed]

This Summit aims to bring together Heads of Governments, Ministers of the Environment, Chief Executive Officers of major corporations and donor agencies to set a new course for the management and preservation of the region's marine and coastal environment. Co-hosted by the Prime Minister of Grenada and the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, the event is supported by Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, and The Nature Conservancy. The Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) was launched in 2008 to provide greater leadership for protecting and sustainably managing the marine and coastal environment across the Caribbean.

Caribbean Forum Identifies Priorities for Sustainable Development [viewed]

11 March 2013: The Caribbean Forum on "Shaping a sustainable development agenda to address the Caribbean reality in the 21st century" took place in Bogota, Colombia, on 5-6 March 2013, and concluded with participants adopting conclusions on priority areas as well as guidelines on how to continue working toward development in the Caribbean.

Like-Minded Developing Countries Urge Ambitious Mitigation Commitments by Developed Countries [viewed]

1 March 2013: Members of the the Like-Minded Developing Countries in Climate Change (LMDC) met in Geneva, Switzerland, on 1 March 2013, to discuss the outcomes of the 18th session of Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 18). The meeting was attended by representatives of Bolivia, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Mali, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Venezuela.

Event: 28th General Meeting of the International Coral Reef Initiative [viewed]

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) will hold its 28th General Meeting (GM28) in Belize. Launched at the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 1) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1994, ICRI brings together governments, the CBD and the Ramsar Convention Secretariats, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), development banks such as the World Bank, regional organizations such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and international organizations such as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). ICRI members use annual General Meetings to interact, discuss past and upcoming ICRI-related activities and adopt resolutions or recommendations that bring international attention to specific issues affecting coral reefs.

Event: Second International Symposium of Lake Titicaca [viewed]

This event aims to promote integrated water resources management (IWRM) of Lake Titicaca, a transboudary lake located in Bolivia and Peru, and to discuss management tools for the sustainable use of water. The symposium will also consider participatory, scientific and technical approaches to the management of Lake Titicaca. The event's objectives include promoting: bi-national cooperation at local, national and regional levels; the participation of scientific and technical actors in the management of Lake Titicaca; and developing recommendations for appropriate authorities.

Delhi Clean Energy Conference Discusses Clean Energy Progress and Cooperation in Emerging Economies [viewed]

25 February 2013: The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) has reported on the outcomes of the Delhi Clean Energy Conference, which showcased clean energy progress in emerging economies and initiated the development of a South-South-North Knowledge and Collaboration Partnership in Clean Energy.
