22 May 2012: Officials from the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) agreed on guidelines for implementing a new “Sustainable Energy for Latin America and the Caribbean” project.
16 May 2012: The 2011/2012 European Report on Development (ERD) “Confronting Scarcity: Managing Water, Energy and Land for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth" stresses that better governance and a combination of public and private action are necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
May 2012: The May 2012 issue of Natural Resources Forum, a quarterly journal issued by the UN Division for Sustainable Development (DSD), features articles on: challenging established narratives on soil erosion and shifting cultivation in Laos; water security; and a Chilean fruit exporters survey on variation in implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in emerging economies' firms.
The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary body of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) which is convened on a regular basis, at least every three years, to identify women's needs at the regional and subregional levels, present recommendations, undertake periodic assessments of the activities carried out in fulfillment of regional and international plans and agreements on the subject, and serve as a forum for debates on relevant issues. The theme of the twelfth conference will be "women's empowerment, gender equality and information and communications technologies".
8 May 2012: The Central American Integration System's (SICA) Council of Women's Affairs Ministers (COMMCA) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) have agreed to work together in promoting the economic rights of women in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
20 April 2012: Several institutions of the Central American Integration System (SICA) have co-hosted a Central American Workshop on Gender, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, to prepare a regional roadmap for policies tackling the linkages among gender, climate change and disaster risk management.
11 May 2012: An informal ministerial meeting took place to address small island developing States' (SIDS) position for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), on 9 May 2012, in Bridgetown, Barbados. Representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) stressed a focus on “the day after Rio." Other delegates addressed issues relating to utilization of ocean resources; gender aspects of resource access; principles of rotation between Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS), Pacific and Caribbean; and strengthening of governance structures.
April 2012: The April issue of the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) “Greenline” newsletter presents publications on energy efficiency, mercury management, and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
April 2012: The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have published the 2012 Global Monitoring Report (GMR) on progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This year's edition, titled “Food Prices, Nutrition, and the Millennium Development Goals,” highlights the need to help developing countries deal with the harmful effects of higher and more volatile food prices.
This Forum will focus on the theme "The Urban Future," and will feature six thematic open dialogues, including one on environment, urban mobility and energy. WUF 6 will also include a series of roundtables conducted by different peer groups, a World Urban Youth Assembly, a Gender Equality Action Assembly, and a Business Assembly.
