This biennial meeting offers a policy and technical forum for countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region to discuss and address forest issues. Government officials from forestry and other sectors are encouraged to attend, as are representatives of NGOs, private industry and other organizations dealing with forest-related issues in the region.
15 May 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a report submitted by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) (FCCC/CP/2013/INF.8) containing information on the resource status approved for non-Annex I Parties to prepare biennial update reports (BUR).
The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has approved the dates of the next Committee on Forestry (COFO), set for 23–27 June 2014. The biennial session will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, and will bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action. Participants will also include representatives from other international organizations and non-governmental groups. Participation in COFO is open to all FAO member countries.
May 2013: Many Strong Voices (MSV) is developing a project on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change, which is a priority area for MSV in 2013. The aim of this project is to reduce vulnerability to climate change by supporting an EbA methodology that integrates scientific and local/traditional knowledge.
25 April 2013: UNEP Risø Centre, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have released a report titled 'National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Baseline Scenarios: Learning from Experiences of Developing Countries.'
30 April 2013: A recent publication by a group of research institutions, including Bioversity International, documents the results of multi-site trials on pine species that aim to better understand options for choosing optimal species for forestry in the face of climate change.
The 2013 AMR section of the annual Substantive Session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will consider the theme "Science, technology and innovation (STI) and culture for sustainable development and the MDGs". This event will seek to highlight the role of science, technology and innovation, and the potential of culture – and related national and international policies – in promoting sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Regional preparatory meetings are being organized to prepare for the session.
23 April 2013: The Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) programme of the European Union (EU) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has endorsed 14 projects from Latin America, Africa and Asia.
21 April 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the leaders of the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Islamic Development Bank and the World Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen inter-agency collaboration on data and statistical capacity building.
18 April 2013: The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), a collaborative effort by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela to promote sustainable development, has been acknowledged at the tenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF10).
