Event: PAIGH Roundtable on Climate Change in the Americas [viewed]
The Organization of American States (OAS) will host a scientific roundtable sponsored by the US National Section of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) on climate change and other Earth science issues in the Americas. Representatives from the OAS, PAIGH, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and other regional agencies will present their perspectives on climate change. PAIGH is a specialized agency of the OAS devoted to promoting hemispheric cooperation in the fields of geography, history, cartography and geophysics. The US National Section includes several US Government agencies, academic and scientific institutions, civil society and professional organizations.

6 March 2012: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) have released a joint report conveying the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water in 2010.
2 March 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a technical paper featuring case studies from Brazil, India, Palau and Senegal. The paper is intended to ground the FAO Technical Guidelines on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Fisheries in practical experience and to inform the use of MPAs globally. 
1 March 2012: The Secretariat of the UN Conference to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has launched a call inviting applications from experts to act as members of the ad hoc Advisory Group of Technical Experts for Impact Indicator Refinement.
27 February 2012: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the US Government's Feed the Future Initiative and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, has launched an initiative to measure women's empowerment in the agriculture sector.
24 February 2012: A three-day workshop sponsored by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation (IICA) brought together Costa Rican officials with biosafety experts from other Latin American countries to discuss policy approaches to risk evaluation and management regarding living modified organisms (LMOs). 
February 2012: A new website has been launched for Many Strong Voices (MSV), a programme linking climate change adaptation and mitigation activities in the Arctic and small islands development States (SIDS). 
23 February 2012: According to a new International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) study, 12% of marine species surveyed in the Gulf of California, the coasts of Panama and Costa Rica, and the five offshore oceanic islands and archipelagos in the tropical eastern Pacific are threatened with extinction.
