OAS General Assembly Concludes With Resolutions on Climate Change, Sustainable Development [viewed]

7 June 2011: The 41st regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which met on 5-7 June 2011, in San Salvador, has adopted the Declaration of San Salvador on Citizen Security in the Americas and 82 resolutions on a broad range of issues, including climate change, sustainable development, drug abuse, terrorism, security, illegal weapons trade, human rights, women rights, and poverty eradication.

27 May 2011: The 10th Session of the UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which convened at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 16-27 May 2011, focused on reviewing progress made on issues ranging from economic and social development to the environment, and whether indigenous peoples have given free, prior and informed consent to decisions affecting their communities, and human rights issues.

Event: Meeting of Experts on Population, Territory and Sustainable Development [viewed]

The Population Division (CELADE) of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host a meeting of national and international experts on population, territory and sustainable development to review, discuss and comment on documents prepared by an ECLAC inter-divisional working group regarding the interactions between population dynamics, territory and sustainable development. The product of this work is to be presented in early 2012 to the Special Committee on Population and Development.

Fourth UN LDC Conference Adopts Istanbul Programme of Action [viewed]

13 May 2011: Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government, international organizations' representatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) from 9-13 May 2011. The Conference aimed to assess the results of the 10-year Brussels Action Plan for the LDCs, which was adopted in 2001, and to agree on new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of LDCs into the next decade.

Event: First GLOBE Summit of Legislators [viewed]

The First Global Summit of Legislators will be hosted by the Government of Brazil, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, GLOBE International and GLOBE Brazil, on the weekend prior to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The Summit will seek to place national legislation, natural capital and scrutiny at the heart of implementing the UNCSD agenda. The event will be attended by heads of Senates, Congresses, Parliaments, and Chairs of relevant parliamentary committees and will negotiate a legislator's protocol to be ratified in the respective legislatures of the participating parliaments.
