This side event to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) will showcase the integration of pro-poor and sound environmental management into national development plans and policies. High-level representatives from Bhutan, Rwanda and Uruguay will share their experiences on combining inclusive development with sustainable management of natural wealth. Participants will get to learn how these countries have been able to combine more inclusive development with sustainable management of natural wealth, through support from the joint UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Environment programme (UNEP) Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI).

The Commonwealth Secretariat, in partnership with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the Indian Ocean Commission (COI), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP), is organizing this high-level panel discussion on the sidelines of the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The event aims to highlight the sustainable development concerns of small island developing States (SIDS). The event will also see the launch of a joint initiative to explore new ways to support climate resilient and low carbon economies, across the three sub-regions, through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

This event will be held on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). It will support dialogue among islands countries and countries with islands on significant initiatives on marine and coastal conservation: the Caribbean Challenge Initiative, the Coral Triangle Initiative, the Micronesia Challenge, and the emerging Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge. The event will promote exchanges of lessons learned, know-how and technologies, and new initiatives among different island fraternities that show the contribution of marine and coastal conservation to sustainable development, and to look at opportunities for scaling up. The EU will hold a forum to address major development issues in the EU Outermost Regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands) in light of the Europe 2020 Strategy to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. 7 June 2012: According to the 2012 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species update for birds, the risk of extinction has increased substantially for close to 100 species of Amazonian birds. The assessment is based on the rate of deforestation occurring in the region. Of particular concern are species with longer life spans, such as the Rio Branco Antbird and the Hoary-throated Spinetail.

21 May 2012: Responding to the Aichi Target that calls for restoring at least 15% of the world's damaged ecosystems by 2020, adopted in the framework of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), botanic gardens around the world have formed the Ecological Restoration Alliance, which plans to restore 100 damaged, degraded or destroyed ecosystems.
