Rio Pavilion Hosts Financing Sustainable Development Day [viewed]

19 June 2012: On its seventh day, the Rio Conventions Pavilion at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) convened for Financing Sustainable Development Day. The event consisted of two sessions on natural capital solutions, namely: protected areas meeting global environmental challenges; and natural capital in Africa, Asia and Latin America - partnerships, policies and investments.

Event: Second Forum on EU Outermost Regions [viewed]

The EU will hold a forum to address major development issues in the EU Outermost Regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands) in light of the Europe 2020 Strategy to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. GEF Council Meeting Approves Largest Work Program to Date [viewed]

After the GEF Council unanimously decided to appoint Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the next GEF CEO/Chairperson, she greeted the Council and current CEO/Chairperson Monique Barbut.7 June 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a Work Program of 84 projects and two programmatic approaches amounting to US$667.26 million in GEF project grants, and appointed Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the GEF's new Chairperson and CEO.

IUCN Releases Bird Update to Red List [viewed]

7 June 2012: According to the 2012 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species update for birds, the risk of extinction has increased substantially for close to 100 species of Amazonian birds. The assessment is based on the rate of deforestation occurring in the region. Of particular concern are species with longer life spans, such as the Rio Branco Antbird and the Hoary-throated Spinetail.

Botanic Gardens Launch Ecological Restoration Alliance [viewed]

21 May 2012: Responding to the Aichi Target that calls for restoring at least 15% of the world's damaged ecosystems by 2020, adopted in the framework of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), botanic gardens around the world have formed the Ecological Restoration Alliance, which plans to restore 100 damaged, degraded or destroyed ecosystems.
