Event: Central American Workshop for Capacity Building on Environmentally Responsible Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) [viewed]

This workshop is organized jointly by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Secretariat of the Basel Convention, through the Basel Convention Regional Center for Central America and Mexico (BCRC-CAM), in cooperation with the Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment (PACE). This training session on e-waste management will promote the environmentally sound handling of used and end-of-life electronic equipment through the PACE guidelines on environmentally sound testing, refurbishment and repair of used computing equipment and on environmentally sound material recovery and recycling of end-of-life computing equipment, as well as through the ITU-T Recommendations and its Toolkit on Environmental Sustainability for the ICT Sector.

CDM Registers 100th Programme of Activity [viewed]

UNFCCC27 February 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has now registered over 100 CDM Programmes of Activities (PoAs), achieving a new milestone. Under the CDM PoA, it is possible to have an unlimited number of similar project activities registered under a single programme umbrella.

CIFOR-Backed Study Assesses Carbon Stocks of Tropical Coastal Wetlands in the Mexican Caribbean [viewed]

14 February 2013: A paper appearing in the open-access journal PLOS ONE presents the first whole-ecosystem analysis of carbon stocks of different kinds of coastal wetlands in a tropical karstic zone. The analysis of “Carbon Stocks of Tropical Coastal Wetlands within the Karstic Landscape of the Mexican Caribbean” estimates that 43.2-58.0 million tons of carbon are stored across 172,176 hectares of coastal wetlands in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (SKBR) of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

Event: Reorienting Technical and Vocational Education and Training Towards the Green Economy [viewed]

This seminar is organized by the Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) and the National Learning Institute of Costa Rica. It aims to: share good practices and experiences between the countries of the region; identify challenges and opportunities for the reorientation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) toward green jobs; come up with recommendations to strengthen TVET for green jobs in the region; and develop competencies in the management of solid waste.

WMO's Voluntary Cooperation Programme Reports on 2012 Activities [viewed]

WMO25 February 2013: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued the January-December 2012 newsletter from its Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) and Development and Regional Activities Department. The publication details, among other activities, new funding agreements to support climate service systems in West Africa, Haiti, Peru and Ethiopia, and summarizes the outcomes of past partnerships, including on drafting meteorology bills, installing automatic weather stations and updating a meteorological service strategic plan.

Event: Leadership Meeting on Environmental Sustainability in Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

Event: Inter-Agency Workshop on Employment and Social Inclusion in a Green Economy [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to review country approaches, tools and policies to create jobs and promote social inclusion in the green economy, including case examples from Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa and Turkey. The workshop is intended for staff of UN and international organizations, researchers, government representatives and development practitioners. Its outcomes will contribute to the work of the new Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), ILO, the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), following on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) decision to enhance knowledge sharing in this area.
