Created by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Council in 1970, the 21-member COPESCAALC aims to promote management and sustainable development of inland fisheries and aquaculture in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In addition to examining the implementation of decisions and recommendations taken at its 11th Session, the Committee will discuss, inter alia: the current state of continental fishing and aquaculture in COPESCAALC countries; options for strengthening the role of COPESCAALC; progress in consolidating the Aquaculture Network of the Americas; recommendations for FAO priorities regarding fishing and aquaculture in LAC; and the results of the workshop on “Formulation of multisectoral policies for sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture.”

16 November 2011: The number of signatories to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reached 67, following signatures by Argentina, Benin and Djibouti. In addition, Gabon recently became the first country to ratify the Protocol.

3 November 2011: Experts from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru recently convened to explore how best to address evidence of climate change impacts on mountain regions in international discussions. Participants discussed the impacts of climate change in Latin America's mountain zones, developed recommendations to meet the challenges and elaborated strategies to ensure that the issue of mountains is adequately addressed in international processes.

27 October 2011: A public dialogue on governance and public participation in sustainable development decision-making included extensive discussion of a proposal to seek a commitment at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) for a regional instrument on implementation of the 1992 Rio Declaration's Principle 10 on public participation, access to information and access to justice.

The thirteenth meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate will convene in Crystal City, Virginia, US (just outside Washington, DC), from 17-18 November 2011. US Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Michael Froman will serve as chair. The meeting will take place at the level of leaders' representatives. Members of the Major Economies Forum include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, representatives will attend from Argentina, Ecuador, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the United Nations. The session will provide an opportunity to exchange views in preparation for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Organization of American States (OAS), as a co-sponsor of the World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability, is conducting a series of "hemispheric dialogues" on sustainable development themes intended to generate recommendations on institutions and governance for sustainable development for both the Congress and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20). The fourth in the series, co-sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), will address strengthening water resources management and what recommendations to make regarding improving good governance for conflict prevention in water resources, in particular in transboundary waters. Future dialogues will address: biodiversity; energy and climate change; oceans governance; forest governance; improving environmental performance of the private sector; and risk management and emergency legislation.

14 November 2011: The Adaptation Fund has released the report of the 15th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB), which was held from 15-16 September 2011, in Bonn, Germany. At the meeting, the AFB discussed issues related to accreditation of Regional Implementing Entities (RIE) and National Implementing Entities (NIE), as well as the application of a cap on funding for projects proposed by Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIE).
