27 October 2011: UN Women has opened a Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in Panama City, Panama. The LAC Center is the first of six planned regional centers.
20 October 2011: The October edition of the World Bank Institute's Climate Change Practice quarterly e-bulletin presents dialogues with various climate change experts, recorded via videoconference, that are focused on preparations for the upcoming 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC.
The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) will hold a meeting of its pilot countries, to evaluate progress and discuss tasks ahead. Pilot countries taking part in SREP are: Ethiopia, Honduras, Kenya, Maldives, Mali and Nepal.
28 October 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the UN has launched two flash appeals to provide emergency assistance to the Central American countries of Nicaragua and El Salvador. Both countries are facing the highest rainfall in 50 years, due to Tropical Depression 12-E.
27 October 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a document containing a synthesis of parties' views on the implications of the inclusion of reforestation of lands with forest in exhaustion as afforestation and reforestation (A/R) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/INF.15).
25 October 2011: A new study released by the World Bank finds that more work is needed to close the gender gap in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), despite progress in many respects, and it calls for a second generation of gender policies in the region.
27 October 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will provide a loan of up to US$3 million to establish credit lines to buy solar power systems for Central American families in isolated rural communities with no access to the electricity grid.
The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Pilot Program on Climate Resilience (PPCR) will hold a meeting to review progress and tasks ahead in implementing PPCR. The pilot programs and projects implemented under the PPCR are country-led, build on National Adaptation Programs of Action (NAPA) and other relevant country studies and strategies, and include countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Forest Investment Program (FIP) will hold a meeting of its pilot countries to evaluate progress and work ahead in reaching its objective of reducing deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) and promoting sustainable forest management (SFM). Pilot countries participating in FIP are: Brazil, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Indonesia, Laos, Mexico and Peru.
26 October 2011: The UN-REDD Programme's October newsletter reviews recent activities related to its work on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).
