19 September 2012: A workshop of Latin American journalists and other communicators organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Tropical Agriculture Center for Research and Higher Education (CATIE) has led to the creation of a new "Network of Forest and Environmental Communicators."
10 September 2012: The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America held a workshop bringing together scientists and government officials from Mexico and the US to set priorities for conservation of the important Big Bend/Río Bravo cross-border ecosystem. The Workshop was held 7 September 2012 in Mexico City.
August 2012: A Central American Integration System (SICA) workshop has resulted in a series of initial draft guidelines on sustainable energy solutions in the design and construction of Central American and Dominican housing projects.
August 2012: The Andean Community's (CAN) biodiversity program, BioCAN, has convened delegates from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to define national plans to strengthen capacities in monitoring land cover, deforestation and environmental degradation, and agreed to promote the development of methodological processes and reports on deforestation for the Andean subregion.
August 2012: Uruguay has launched a national project for energy efficient lighting, supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Basel Coordinating Center-Stockholm Convention Regional Center (BCCC-SCRC) for Latin America and the Caribbean, the en.lighten Initiative, and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
August 2012: Central American nations and Mexico launched a new Forum for the Comprehensive Management of Disaster Risk to promote disaster risk awareness in Central America and share the experiences of Mexico in the development and implementation of financial instruments for the prevention and management of natural disasters and disaster risk transfer schemes.
12 September 2012: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Loan Scheme has issued its first loan authorization, authorizing the provision of more than US$3 million towards 23 CDM projects.
CLIMATE 2012 / KLIMA 2012 is being organized by the Research and Transfer Centre of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and will consider the themes "Climate Change, Island States and Sustainable Technologies". The conference will introduce the latest scientific findings and technological developments related to climate change, and examine their links with renewable energy in small island nations. The patron of the 2012 worldwide online climate conference is Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Secretary General of the African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) Group of States Secretariat. Partners include UNEP, WMO, OSS, UNESCO, SIDSnet, AOSIS, and IDRC. CLIMATE 2012 / KLIMA 2012 is also organized as part of the project "Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network" (DIREKT), funded by the ACP Science and Technology Programme, an EU programme for cooperation between the European Union and the ACP region (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific). DIREKT is a cooperation scheme involving universities from Germany, Fiji, Mauritius, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago with the aim of strengthening the science and technology capacity in the field of renewable energy of a sample of ACP small island developing states, by means of technology transfer, information exchange and networking.
This workshop aims to build capacity and share experiences in implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in the framework of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. It is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Mexico's National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) and the Botanical Garden of the Biology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and partners will organize a workshop on aid effectiveness in the area of public expenditure related to climate change, bringing 100 government officials and development partners from the Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America regions to Bangkok. Particpants at the three-day workshop, titled "Climate Public Expenditure and Institutional Reviews: Workshop on Past Experience and the Way Forward" and convening from 10-12 September 2012, will work on recommendations for peer support and collaboration and produce guidelines for a new "Climate Change Public Expenditure Review Sourcebook".
