Natural Resources Canada is hosting the third meeting of the Heavy Oil Working Group, an initiative launched in April 2010 at the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Ministerial in Washington, DC. This Group brings together regional partners from the Americas to share experiences with heavy oil, update on the current state of technology, and discuss other areas of mutual interest, such as environmental and policy issues involved with heavy oil development.

Brazil's Ministry of Agricultural Development, with support from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), will hold a "virtual congress" aimed at providing a platform for civil society and the general public to discuss sustainable development issues related to family agriculture with experts, researchers and public sector managers. The discussions will be synthesized into a special report that will be presented to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The virtual conference will feature two broad conferences on the themes of "green economy" and "socio-productive inclusion," while specialized forums will be provided on three thematic axes: rural sustainable development (including poverty and the role of women); natural resources and food sovereignty (including water and land management, desertification and climate change); and sustainable consumption and production.

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment is hosting this first meeting of the technical expert group to complete the development of a framework for the environmentally sound management (ESM) of hazardous and other wastes. The initiative is related to decision BC-10/3 on the Indonesian-Swiss country-led initiative to improve the effectiveness of the Basel Convention, which identifies the need for a comprehensive effort to improve guidance on the ESM of wastes.
