29 February 2012: The Andean Community (CAN) held its first meeting on coordination regarding illegal mining, which provided an opportunity to share experiences on possible cooperation within the framework of the CAN to address this issue.
24 February 2012: The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) agreed the details of a US$65 million dedicated Climate Action lending and technical assistance programme funded by the EIB for the 18 CDB member countries.
14 February 2012: The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has begun the second annual round of consultations among senior government officials in each of its four Sub-regions.
February 2012: The Global Islands Partnership (GLISPA) has released the February issue of its newsletter, titled "GLISPA Progress Update," which features articles on: the recent GLISPA Steering Committee meeting; the Caribbean Challenge Initiative; the Micronesia Challenge; the Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge; GLISPA Plans for Rio+20; and the upcoming 2012 World Conservation Congress.
The Rio Conventions Pavilion at Rio+20 is a collaborative outreach activity of the Secretariats of the Rio Conventions (UNFCCC, UNCCD and CBD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and 25 other international, national and local partners. It aims to promote and strengthen synergies between the Rio Conventions at implementation levels by providing a coordinated platform for awareness-raising and information-sharing about the linkages in science, policy and practice between biodiversity, climate change and combating desertification/land degradation.
January 2012: The 13th issue of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Center for the Wider Caribbean's (RAC/REMPEITC) quarterly newsletter, "Caribe," highlights three workshops held in the region to help countries meet their obligations under International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions regarding ballast water management (BWM) and oil spill preparedness and response.
The Sixth Steering Committee of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Center for the Wider Caribbean (RAC/REMPEITC) will consider the Center's 2011-2012 work program and strategic plan. RAC/REMPEITC was created in 1995 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Center (CAR/RCU) to assist countries of the Wider Caribbean in developing their national capabilities to implement the Cartagena Convention Oil Spill Protocol, the IMO's 1990 International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response, and Cooperation and other IMO Conventions and Protocols relevant to preparedness for and response to oil, hazardous and noxious substances releases, and other marine environmental threats from ships in the Wider Caribbean Region.
16 February 2012: The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has awarded over US$1.3 million in grants to 18 projects that will support communities in Canada, Mexico and the US in their efforts to address environmental problems at the local level.
16 February 2012: The US, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico and Sweden, with the support of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), have launched the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, which aims to reduce short-lived climate pollutants, carbon, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and methane.
14 February 2011: The Global Organic Market Access Conference focused on challenges facing organic agriculture in emerging markets, noting the large impact that minor differences in organic standards can have on accessing markets.
