UNCSD “Making It Happen” Newsletter Focuses on Major Groups, SD Goals Proposal
30 September 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) has released a special issue of its newsletter, "Rio+20: Making It Happen,” with a focus on Major Groups' perspectives. It also features a proposal by Colombia and Guatemala to develop Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to complement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and 17 draft SDGs recently proposed by civil society experts.
In other stories, the newsletter reviews: youth as a key group in sustainable development and its strategy for influencing negotiations; implementation of sustainable development by Major Groups worldwide and plans to present their work at the UNCSD; and the NGO alliance CIVICUS, which recently became a global co-organizing partner on behalf of the NGOs Major Group, and which held its 10th World Assembly in September under the theme of sustainable, inclusive development based on human rights.
Finally, the newsletter calls for readers to share views on the “nexus between water, energy and food security” via an online survey being conducted by the women's Major Group; and announces a series of one-day trainings conducted by the UNCSD Secretariat, the UN Regional Economic Commissions and Stakeholder Forum for regional major groups and other stakeholder partners to build capacity to engage with the Rio+20 process. The trainings will take place in Cairo, Egypt, Seoul, Republic of Korea, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Geneva, Switzerland, immediately preceding the regional preparatory meetings being held in these cities.
